Keratin is a protein and the major building block of the hair, much like collagen is to the skin. Keratin acts both as an external protective protein in the cuticle (the outer layers of the hair) and as an internal structural protein in the cortex (the core of the hair that determines its strength). Due to outside damaging factors and lifestyle choices, the body might not be able to produce sufficient amounts of keratin, which is one of the reasons for hair loss and thinning.

Biotin plays an important role in making fatty acids, protein metabolism and creating energy. Though not common, biotin deficiency can lead to impaired hair growth and thinning.
